Mayer State Park to Mosier Kayak Tour, OR
Saturday, May 9, 20208:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Field Representative Peter Cornelison will lead us seven miles down the Columbia River from Mayer State Park to Mosier. Along the way, we will pass by Memaloose Island, see beautiful shorelines, lovely sandy beaches and get an up-close look at the area Union Pacific Railroad wants to use for the double track expansion into Mosier, which Friends is actively opposing.
We will meet up at the take out, Rock Creek Beach in Mosier, to suit up, load boats onto a few of the cars and drive approx. 12 minutes east to the Mayer State Park boat launch to put in. It is helpful, but not essential, if your car roof rack can hold 2 boats. We'll paddle downstream with the current and expect to be off the water around 3 p.m.
This outing is for experienced kayakers and canoeists only; you will be asked about your experience level. You must be comfortable crossing the Columbia River, which we do several times. You will need to supply your own gear; Friends does not provide equipment or instruction. You must also be a competent swimmer. *Canoes with flotation and sit on top kayaks are OK if it is not too windy, we will make this call a day in advance.
Please wear appropriate layers, waterproof outer layers, gloves, PFD, sun protection, lunch, a change of clothes and shoes for afterward.
