Cape Horn Loop, WA

Cape Horn Loop alert Trail Alert. Click here for more info
This is not a dog-friendly trail because of steep cliffs. Two dogs have died here recently so please keep your dog at home.

The full loop trail is open from July 16-Jan. 31. The 1.5-mile road section of this loop hike is on a county road. Please walk single-file and be aware of vehicle as there are blind corners. Walk on the side of the road as you normally would; remember this section is not a trail even though it’s part of the hike.

From Feb. 1-July 15, the lower section of the Cape Horn trail has a seasonal closure for nesting peregrine falcons. The closed section is located between a point about a half-mile southwest of the west pedestrian underpass/tunnel at SR-14 and the bottom of Cape Horn Rd. Failure to respect the closure can result in as much as a $5,000 fine, and future use of the trail is dependent on hikers respecting this closure. Cape Horn Hike Safety Alert:

June 28 -  The upper canyon is suspected to be unstable due to rocks, fallen trees, and other debris carried and dislodged by the flood. We recommend that the public not climb or proceed past the log jam, due to the risks of serious injury or death. This is certainly not a safe place for young children, as there has been one death in the past.

The Sunset Bridge is under construction from July 3-August 14, 2017. There will be intermittent closures during this time: July 17-21 and Aug 8-10. Contact the USFS if you have questions at 360-891-5005. The Forest Service roads up to Ed's Trailhead are in very poor condition this year; much worse than in year's past. You will encounter potholes, boulders, stream channels, and washboarding. A mid to high-clearance car is necessary.
