Be safe this summer when hiking in the Gorge! Now is a good time to review these Hiker Safety Tips to ensure you have a safe and fun trail experience.
  • Hike with a partner or group
  • Stay on marked trails (it's much easier to get lost than you would think!)
  • Stay away from the downward edge of trails. Lots of trails in the Gorge have steep drop-offs, and the edges of trails can give way without warning.
  • Leave your itinerary with a friend or family member, and check in when you return from your hike
  • Devise an emergency plan with your hiking partners and ensure everyone knows what to do if you become separated or if an emergency arises
  • Take breaks or vary your pace to maintain your energy
  • Drink plenty of water but never drain your supply between refills
  • Wear appropriate clothing - cotton kills! Hike in synthetic material or wool.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and plan your approach before hiking in hazardous areas.
  • Carry the 10 Essentials with you on all hikes.
