Ensuring the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act and other laws protecting Gorge resources are actively enforced is at the core of what we do. For over 40 years, Friends has used a combination of old-fashioned grassroots advocacy, sophisticated legal strategies, and community education to protect Gorge resources and keep watch on reckless land development.

We have defeated numerous proposed reckless large-scale developments in the Gorge; worked to strengthen state laws to protect the Gorge and the communities that live there from irresponsible fossil fuel rail transport; and won important legal victories to protect Gorge scenic resources and support key treaty rights of tribal partners. An essential element of our success has been our ability to effectively build a diverse network of community partners and mobilize thousands of dedicated Friends activists and allies across the region.

Since our earliest years in the 1980s, community advocates and activists have been instrumental in securing remarkable victories for the protection of the Gorge’s scenic, natural, cultural, and recreational resources. We want every member of our community to feel empowered to raise your voice and speak out on the issues that matter most to you. With the numerous challenges the Gorge is facing, taking action can sometimes seem daunting, but activism has the power to transform and uplift, providing a way for each of us to make a meaningful impact.

By subscribing to our action alerts, you’ll be the first to hear from our Advocacy & Conservation Team about urgent threats to the Gorge and how you can make a difference. Our emails provide essential background information, talking points for contacting elected officials and agencies, and other ways to lend your voice.
