Size: 50 acres
Location: Wasco County, OR
Acquired: 2013
The Mt. Ulka property was initially purchased in 2013 as two modest parcels, along with a land easement passing through a neighboring private property. Barbara Robinson, a longtime Friends member, played a pivotal role in connecting the landowner and the on-site cattle manager with Friends’ staff. With sweeping views of the Columbia River and its surrounding landscape, Barbara envisioned the site’s potential for public access. In 2015, ownership of the upper parcel on Seven Mile Hill was transferred to the U.S. Forest Service. Then, in 2023 and 2024, two additional acquisitions were made—one near the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum, and the other through a small trail easement on private land.
Mt. Ulka is predominantly grassland, accented with clusters of oaks and maples along its northeastern and eastern borders, as well as at its western tip. In spring and summer, the area bursts into color, with vibrant blooms of native grasses, wildflowers, and shrubs. Parts of the trail easement trace a cliff to the east, offering striking views of The Dalles Country Club below. The acquisition of Mt. Ulka marks a significant milestone in advancing the goals of Gorge Towns to Trails. The development of a new trail system here would serve as a key link in the region’s 200-mile loop trail network, designed to connect small towns through walking, hiking, and biking routes.
