Size: 100 acres
Location: Skamania County, WA
Acquired: 2016 & 2018
Good’s Woods Preserve was acquired in two phases: the northern 50-acre parcel was purchased in 2016, and the southern 50-acre parcel was generously donated to Friends in 2018, with the condition that the land remains unlogged in perpetuity.
This acquisition presents Friends with an opportunity to safeguard scenic views, protect and enhance critical habitats—particularly for species such as the northern spotted owl, coho salmon, and cutthroat trout—and manage on-site recreational activities more effectively.
Good’s Woods stands out from most of Friends’ other properties due to its relatively uniform forest structure, characterized by a dominant canopy of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and red alder. The understory is composed of a diverse array of native species, including Oregon grape, vine maple, ocean spray, hazelnut, huckleberry, and wild roses. The forest floor is carpeted with vanilla leaf, sword fern, starflower, oxalis, trailing blackberry, and star-flowered Solomon’s seal.
However, a few non-native species, such as Canada thistle, burdock, holly, and Himalayan blackberry, are being closely monitored, especially along the forest edges that border adjacent clearcuts to the east.
