Planting Willows with Oregon State Parks

Join Friends of the Columbia Gorge in planting willows along Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail.

Before you register, please:

Project Description

In 2019 and 2020, Friends volunteers planted willow and other native shrubs and trees along the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail and other nearby Oregon State Parks. For this project, volunteers will be filling in gaps in the plantings where some plants struggled to survive drought conditions this past year.

Accessibility: Work includes, walking in sloped grassy uneven terrain, bending, digging in rocky soil. Planting site is adjacent to I-84 so there is traffic noise.

What to Bring:

  • Lunch, snacks, and plenty of water
  • Face mask (cloth, paper, or medical-grade)
  • Personal hand sanitizer
  • Thick leather gloves (provided if needed)
  • Loppers, shovel(provided if needed)
  • Sun protection
  • 10 essentials, including personal first aid kit
  • A pack to carry your personal gear
  • Photo/copy of vaccination card

What to Wear:

  • Boots or closed-toe shoes
  • Long durable pants and long-sleeved shirt for working with wire and in thorns
  • Dress for weather: extra layers of clothing in case of wet or cold weather

Schedule:

  • 9:00 a.m. - Welcome, introductions and safety circle
  • 9:20 a.m. -Walk or caravan to planting site
  • 9:30 a.m. - Willow planting begins!
  • 11:00 a.m. - Lunch break
  • 1:00 p.m. - Work party concludes

A confirmation email with directions will be sent out 3-5 days before the event.
