Angel’s Rest & Coopey Falls, OR

Saturday, April 25, 2020

8:45 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Moderate: 4.8 miles | 1,475-ft elev. gain

Take a thoughtful hike through burned and recovering understory along this popular trail with leader Mary Vogel. Views along the way include all the way to Silver Star Mountain, then Cape Horn, Hamilton Mountain, and Beacon Rock going east. We’ll get an overhead view of Coopey Falls, and a quick detour will get us to smaller Upper Coopey Falls. After our hike, we can view the 150’ Coopey Falls from its base with a visit to the convent of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, who have generously granted us permission to visit their land.

In the last 30 years, the forests here have burned twice (1991 and 2017). Does this trail represent the future of NW west side forests? We’ll discuss what we should be doing to prepare for that future, and how the Gorge 2020 Management Plan should address climate change impacts and adaptation.

Wear sturdy hike boots/shoes, and bring your daypack with a water, snacks, a sack dinner, and layers for protection against the elements. Hiking poles strongly recommended. View the recommended 10+ Essentials List to help you pack.

Before this outing, make sure you understand our Hike Program Information & Guidelines.
