Whether you are an experienced Friends shepherd or a new volunteer looking to learn Gorge hikes and meet new people, "shepherd trainings" will help kick off your 2009 hike shepherding experience.

Get ready for the upcoming 2009 hiking season by renewing or attaining your CPR/First Aid certification with training provided at a discounted rate of $27 (regularly $60) by NW Responder, click here to register. A lunchtime presentation of on the trail protocol for shepherds will be provided by Renee Tkach, Outdoor Programs Coordinator. Then you'll have the opportunity to sign up to help an experienced leader on some great outings.

Shepherd FAQ's:
1. What does a shepherd do? What are the responsibilities?
A shepherd assists the experienced leader or co-leaders of the hike. Each hike is different but, in general, here are the shepherd's responsibilities:
- Help coordinate carpools at the meeting place and be sure hikers all sign Friends' waiver form,
- Help ensure group cohesion and safety,
- Act as the "sweep," hiking toward the rear of the group,
- On rare occasions, help the leader assist a sick or injured hiker back to the trailhead,
- Be a friendly representative of Friends of the Columbia Gorge out on the trail, making sure our mission, issues, and programs are mentioned and membership opportunities are presented. (You don't have to be an expert, but you do need to be enthusiastic and help folks connect with the information they need to answer questions or concerns.)
2. Do I need any special knowledge or previous experience?
Our shepherd training gives all the basics you need. If you enjoy wildflowers, Gorge history, geology, or local lore, that's a real plus, but special knowledge is not required. Familiarity with Friends' issues and programs is provided at the training. We hold two shepherd training sessions in late winter/spring that offer all the information you need to be a hike shepherd.
3. How old should a shepherd be?
18 years or older, please. Younger volunteers are welcome to co-shepherd with a parent or older volunteer, and can also get active in our stewardship efforts.
4. How will a shepherd be supported?
All hike volunteers report to our Outdoor Programs Coordinator, Karen Hardigg. Communications are sent to volunteers before and after every hike, and Karen is in the office or can return phone calls Monday-Friday. Experienced hike leaders are responsible and set the guidelines for each hike. There is also a Yahoo! group with resources and community discussions available.
5. What is the time commitment?
New shepherds need to attend one Shepherd Training that lasts two hours and commit to at least one hike. Lots of shepherds volunteer for two or more (yes, it's that much fun). Hikes are usually on weekends and range from 3-8 hours (including travel time), depending on length of the trail and hike location.
6. Does a shepherd need a car, driver's license or insurance?
Not necessarily, although it can help. A majority of our hike carpools start at Gateway Park and Ride in outer NE Portland, which is accessible by public transit. From there, hikers carpool to the trailhead. Of course, any drivers are required by law to have both a license and insurance.
